Wade's mother speaks out after another senseless act of gun violence. Dwyane Wade's cousin, 32-year old Nykea Aldridge, was shot and killed while pushing a stroller down the street in Chicago's South Side yesterday afternoon.
According to reports, Aldridge was out with her baby around 3:30 pm when two men approached a third man and opened fire; one of the stray bullets struck the mother of four.
Just one day before the murder, Dwyane and his mother, Jolinda Wade, had appeared on a panel discussion for The Undefeated in which they openly spoke about their experiences with violence and police, and the responsibility to act. A few months ago, Dwyane Wade specifically spoke about the rampant gun violence in Chicago during the opening speech of the ESPYs alongside LeBron James, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony.
This was a message that both Wade and his mother had to reiterate on Friday night after the tragic killing of another one of their family members.
"Just sat up on a panel yesterday, The Undefeated, talking about the violence that's going on within our city of Chicago, never knowing that the next day we would be the ones that would be actually living and experiencing it," Jolinda Wade said. "We're still going to try and help these people to transform their minds and give them a different direction, so this thing won't keep happening. We're still going to help empower people like the one who senselessly shot my niece in the head."
My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal. #EnoughIsEnough— DWade (@DwyaneWade) August 27, 2016
