Alton Sterling’s Son Speaks Out About His Father’s Death & Continued Violence

Viewers were brought to tears when Alton Sterling’s son, Cameron broke down on camera just a day after his father was shot six times by Baton Rouge police officers. Now, while still coping with his family’s loss, Cameron has come forward to speak on his father’s untimely death and the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Cameron stepped to the podium Wednesday (July 13) to share his thoughts on his father and “people in general.” He began on a more general note. “I feel that people in general, no matter what the race is, should come together as one united family,” Cameron said in front of a mural of his father. “There should be no more arguments, disagreements, violence, crimes. Everyone should come together as one united family.”

Alton’s eldest son also spoke on his father’s character. “My father was a good man,” he continued. “[His death]was a sacrifice to show everyone what has been going in life. And it should give everyone a push that everyone should be together, not against each other. Everyone should be on one accord, not a different note… And I truly feel that my father was a good man, and he will always be a good man.”

He continued to thank those who have supported him and the rest of his family through this difficult time, but he also sent a message to protesters of the Black Lives Matter Movement who continue to march all around the nation. “And another thing, the protesting, I feel that everyone, yes, you can protest, but I want everyone to protest the right way. Protest in peace, not guns, not drugs, not alcohol, not violence. Everyone needs to protest in the right way with peace, not violence, none whatsoever,” Cameron added.

Alton Sterling was killed during an altercation with two police officers in Baton Rouge. Video of his death went resurfaced the following day on July 5, and soon went viral, sparking outrage towards police brutality. The Black Lives Matter protesters have formed peaceful protests in Baton Rouge and around the nation in support of Alton and many other black lives cut short by the police. Following Alton’s death, an official civil investigation was opened, and is still underway.
